Dr Calvin Mackie: Purpose of Education?

QUESTION 13:

THE PURPOSE OF EDUCATION

Dr Martin Luther King Jr., the great American Freedom Fighter, had the following views on the purpose and therefore the function of education (taken from MoreHouse College Student Paper, The Maroon Tiger, in 1947)

“Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life.”

The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” – (www.drmartinlutherkingjr.com)

Malcolm Forbes, an American Publisher, posted this famous comment on the website Amazon.com:

The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one”, which when you think about it expresses the transformation a person’s mind and being undergoes in a classroom and every learning environment.

An finally one of the greatest minds of the 20th Century, whose principles’ have shaped the way we think about science and life, Albert Einstein, believed the following:

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.
